Following the recent release of its Japan-Hokkaido Seabed Intelligence Report (SIR), Global Maritime’s Geosciences department – “GM Geo” is excited to launch the latest in its series – a geological, geohazard and geotechnical desktop study report covering the UK North Sea.
Global Maritime Geosciences Launches UK North Sea Seabed Intelligence Report
The report covers the North Sea Area of Opportunity (NEAO), a 26,600 km2 section of seabed in the UK North Sea, identified within the Crown Estate’s ‘Future of Offshore Wind’ report.
With average wind speeds exceeding 9.5 m/s and water depths ranging from 40 to 240 mLAT, the NEAO presents significant potential for both fixed and floating offshore wind projects. To achieve a capacity of 10–16 GW, development would be required across 8–15% of the NEAO.
The UK North Sea SIR is a valuable source of information for developers seeking to identify potential lease areas within the NEAO in addition to providing context to support further studies relating to concept selection for fixed and floating substructures, foundations and subsea cables.
The SIR investigates seabed conditions across the 26,600 km2 area of search, identifying principal strata and the suitability/risk implications for a variety of different foundation technologies and for cable burial potential. To provide added value, the SIR also considers the implications of existing marine traffic, seabed wrecks, infrastructure, environmental designations and other marine uses on the siting and development of offshore wind projects.
