Get to Know GM – A Q&A with Holly Cairns

Holly is a Senior Geomatics Consultant within the Geoscience department at Global Maritime. With over 7 years’ experience in offshore consultancy, she utilises geospatial data and products to contribute the development of offshore wind projects globally. Her role includes the governance, processing, analysis, and presentation of seabed data to respond to client’s technical queries.

In this Q&A, Holly provides an insight into the dynamic nature of her role, sharing what inspires her work in offshore wind, the projects that have challenged and developed her expertise, and the collaborative culture that makes Global Maritime a rewarding place to work. She also discusses emerging trends within the industry and how innovation and knowledge-sharing are helping accelerate the energy transition.

What does a day in the life of a Senior Geomatics Consultant look like?

Consultancy work means that every day is varied – I work on different projects day-to-day! I spend most of my time managing, processing, and analysing spatial data for offshore wind development. I also spend time producing cartographic deliverables such as drawings and alignment charts. There is also a lot of report writing involved in my role, with my contribution growing over the years.

What inspired you to pursue a career within offshore wind?

I became very aware of environmental issues whilst I studied for my Physical Geography degree. I am passionate about creating a cleaner, more sustainable world for future generations. Offshore wind can be a viable, abundant alternative to fossil fuels if we let it. I wanted to combine my passion for climate action with my love for the ‘Why? – which is what GIS answers!

What’s your favourite thing about being part of the Global Maritime team, beyond the day-to-day work?

To those who know me, it is no secret that my colleagues at Global Maritime have become some of my greatest friends. The uplifting, unconditional support that I have received throughout my career has motivated me to strive for greatness every day. I find my team and the work humbling – there is a feeling like you are part of something greater than yourself, which is reflected in the culture at Global Maritime.

What’s something exciting you’re currently working on?

Developing Global Maritime’s Spatial BAS capabilities. This is a tool that we have been developing for the last year, and we are in a place to deploy it on projects. It has been an exciting opportunity to challenge my knowledge of cable installation tool, python and SQL coding, and ground modelling.

What standout projects have you worked on, and how have they helped shape your career journey?

I have recently been involved in an export cable ground model project that I have found particularly challenging as I had little prior experience with the project, client or workflow. The project allowed me to work closer with other colleagues within our Geoscience team than ever before, and I gained a greater understanding of their work whilst developing GIS processing workflows to refine our ground modelling products. It was a project of trial, error, and lessons learnt that has shaped my confidence in ground modelling and given me a renewed appreciation for my colleagues.

What’s one trend in the offshore world right now that excites you the most?

Collaboration! It is refreshing to see offshore wind developers working together and supporting the government in advancing offshore wind development. Data is an asset, but sharing knowledge is the key to accelerating offshore wind development. The better our understanding of geological risks and hazards, the further we can mitigate against them.

If you could describe your role in three words, what would they be?

Fulfilling, challenging, exciting
