Harriet Alpha Platform Decommissioning and Removal
Santos

“We engaged Global Maritime early in the process to act as our independent verification body, and they guided us through what best practice looked like for a scope such as Harriet Alpha. They brought valuable North Sea experience to the table, which we are still building locally, while maintaining a pragmatic approach to working through the problems with us.”

Scope of Work

Global Maritime Australia was appointed by Santos as the Independent Verification Body (IVB) to support the decommissioning, removal and transportation of the Harriet Alpha platform.

Engaged from the early stages of planning through to offshore execution, Global Maritime provided independent technical verification throughout the project lifecycle, drawing on both local and international decommissioning expertise. The scope included verification activities supporting the removal and transportation of the 1,600-tonne topsides, 1,480-tonne jacket and associated offshore infrastructure.

By combining global decommissioning experience and lessons learnt, Global Maritime helped ensure the safe execution of one of Australia’s largest offshore platform removal campaigns while supporting effective planning, risk management and regulatory compliance.

Challenges

Harriet Alpha represented one of Australia’s largest and most technically significant offshore decommissioning projects. The scale of the removal campaign, combined with the need for safe lifting, transportation and onshore processing of ageing infrastructure, required robust independent verification throughout planning and execution. Applying international decommissioning experience to local project requirements and maintaining close collaboration across multiple stakeholders were key to achieving a safe and efficient outcome.

Outcome – Results and Deliverables

Global Maritime supported the successful verification of the removal and transportation campaign from planning through offshore execution. The project delivered the safe removal of the 1,600-tonne topsides, 1,480-tonne jacket and associated infrastructure, establishing a new benchmark for large-scale offshore decommissioning in Australia.

By combining local delivery with international technical expertise, Global Maritime helped transfer proven global practices to the Australian market, contributing to the safe, timely and efficient completion of this flagship project while supporting the continued growth of Australia’s offshore decommissioning capability.
